Description
If you pronounce it carefully, “De lira ire” sounds a lot like “Delirium”. It is the Latin expression that originated the concept of delirium and insanity. “De lira ire” meant “to deviate from the norm”. In that aspect, Dûrga couldn’t have chosen a more suitable title for this album. Although it’s a post rock album, clearly inspired by the Mogwais, Explosions and Astronaut-Gods we all know so well, Dûrga dares to try something unusual. I say “dare” because these experiments are far from evident.
It all starts with an intro, ‘Nox’, followed by an excellent piece of heavy post rock, ‘Iratus’. So far so good. I’m beginning to become a fan. Then, on ‘Amentia’, influences from sludge metal arrive, especially in the vocals. Here, the focus seems to shift from Mogwai to Amenra, so to speak and that will often be the case. ‘Serenitas’ even combines the post metal screams with friendly guitar plucks which is a bewildering experience.
But the biggest surprise for me, is the punk-rock anthem ‘Tempestas’. It’s fast, intense and even contains Spanish raps. Yes, raps. This is massively surprising but somehow it works perfectly on this album. ‘Stella’ even seems to nudge towards what I call arena rock and ‘Lux’ does something awesome with shoegaze, indie rock and post rock. It’s bizarre to witness all these different elements in an album that mostly categorizes simply as post rock. (Merchants Of Air)
